Hans J. Wegner designed the pp101 chair as a simplified counterpart to The Round Chair (1949), aiming for a more efficient production process—without compromising his characteristic attention to proportion and detail.
A defining element of the design is the horizontally curved backrest, which clearly reflects Wegner’s aesthetic and technical approach from that period.
The chair’s original form was rediscovered during a review of Wegner’s early drawings. It became clear that previous versions featuring similar backrests did not fully match his vision. This led to the realisation of the pp101 exactly as Wegner intended—featuring a seat handwoven from linen webbing and a distinctive front rail engineered to maintain the webbing’s tension over time.
