The Gotland Sheepskin

Gotland sheepskin is unique and incredibly beautiful. They are 100 percent natural and no color has been added to the skin in the processing. Although the sheepskin is primarily dark gray, color and curls varies. When ordering a Pelican chair made from Gotland lambskin, it is therefore important to know that each chair has a special and individual expression.

About 200 kilometers from Stockholm the Swedish island of Gotland is located in the Baltic Sea. Gotland sheep are very active and social animals that have adapted to the harsh Scandinavian climate. They are robust and thrive particularly well in large areas where they contribute to biodiversity. Their distinctive feature is their distinct grayish and curly fur.

From thick, almost wavy, to large and shiny, soft curls, every sheep is unique and no two are alike. The skin color can naturally vary from light gray to dark gray with nuances of white and black. This gives each Pelican Chair an unmistakable and individual expression, which pleasantly underlines the animalistic and characteristic character of the chair.

With its soft, sculptural curves, the Pelican Chair evokes the image of one body cradling another. As you settle into it, the chair embraces you with a warm, inviting presence true to Finn Juhl’s signature style, it encourages relaxed seating in multiple positions. Available in a wide range of different upholstery, the Pelican Chair remains a testament to comfort and artistic expression.

Among Juhl’s many creations, the Pelican Chair stands out as a vivid reflection of his fascination with surrealism. First unveiled at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in 1940, it drew attention for its unconventional form and sturdy, grounded legs.

While Juhl typically named his designs after the year they were created, this piece earned the affectionate nickname “Pelican” over time. Initially produced in very limited numbers, the chair faded into obscurity—until its celebrated revival in 2001, when it was reintroduced to a new generation of design enthusiasts.
