The PP Møbler – pp505 Cow Horn Chair Great luxury sometimes comes in small packages. This is one of Wegner’s smallest chairs, but it is an amazing work of art. Designed in 1952, the Cow Horn Chair is the immediate successor to Wegner’s groundbreaking pp501/pp503 Round Chair. The continuity in form and philosophy is obvious, but it was designed for a different purpose: Wegner created a smaller chair that fits easily under the table, making it more suitable for dining room settings.

PP Møbler – PP505 Cow Horn Chair by Hans J. Wegner

Paying tribute to the natural beauty of solid wood shaped by hand, Hans J. Wegner designed the pp505 Cow Horn Chair as a compact yet expressive seating piece. The chair features a sculptural back and armrests crafted from two large pieces of solid wood, joined precisely at the center.

This joint—carefully aligned with the wood grain using a tenon construction—could have been concealed or doweled. Instead, Wegner chose to highlight it, transforming a structural necessity into a defining decorative element. To enhance its visual impact, he used wood in a contrasting color, allowing the joint to stand out as an intentional design statement.

This innovative approach later became a hallmark of many Wegner designs and serves as a clear example of his philosophy: celebrating craftsmanship, structure, and material honesty through thoughtful, timeless design.
