About Arne Jacobsen

Arne Jacobsen is a world-renowned architect who forged a completely new design idiom.

As one of Denmark’s most celebrated architects, Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) became synonymous with modernism, in Denmark and internationally. His furniture designs — often created as part of a larger building project — balance stringency with expressiveness, earning him recognition worldwide.

Jacobsen saw himself first and foremost as an architect. His functionalist work ranged from summer houses to full Gesamtkunstwerk projects, where every detail — down to the cutlery and door handles — bore his signature. The SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen is a prime example: Jacobsen designed not just the building, but every interior element within it.

Whether working on architecture, lighting, textiles, furniture, or industrial design, Jacobsen approached each project with the same uncompromising perfectionism. His style was functionalist at its core, refined by an organic aesthetic shaped by his fascination with nature. He was also ahead of his time in materials — steel, moulded plywood, and aluminium — always used with respect for their character.

Born in Copenhagen in 1902, Jacobsen trained as a bricklayer before enrolling at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1924, where teachers like Kaare Klint and Kay Fisker shaped his rigorous design approach. He made his mark early, and in 1929, together with fellow student Flemming Lassen, won a major competition to design the House of the Future — launching a career that would span six decades.

His portfolio includes iconic works such as Nationalbanken, the Bellavista housing estate, Bellevue Theatre, and Aarhus City Hall.

Jacobsen was also a dedicated educator, serving as professor at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen (1956–1965), and later received honorary doctorates from the University of Oxford and the University of Strathclyde. His work earned him top international honors, including the RIBA Bronze Medal (1963) and the Médaille d’Or from the Académie d’Architecture de France (1971).
